Project Details

  • Sector: Public Sector
  • Location: Carmarthenshire
  • Solution: Erosion Control, Habitat Creation
  • Client: Carmarthenshire County Council

Salix was awarded the contract by Carmarthenshire County Council to repair ninety metres of bank erosion that had caused the footpath to collapse into the River Towy in the centre of Carmarthen.

Cbec eco engineering conducted a range of surveys to allow detailed hydraulic modelling to inform the best design solutions. The final design was based upon the known shear stress at a 1 in 200-year flood event.

Due to the instability of the existing riverbank, there was no access for heavy plant above the eroded slope. To overcome this obstacle, Salix installed a temporary jetty which enabled us to load a multicat boat.

Aqua Rock Bags were installed at the eroded toe of the failing riverbank. Easy to install and a robust defence against erosion, these innovative solutions provide habitat for a wide range of invertebrates and allow for natural revegetation.

Brushwood was then applied to the surface of the newly formed slope. The brushwood trapped fine sediment and vegetated naturally to quickly stabilize the surface of the new slope.
