Brushwood Fascines

Brushwood fascines

Salix produce a range of brushwood fascines and mattresses for use in rivers, canals, lakes, and intertidal environments.

Made from densely packed, sustainably sourced brushwood, typically hazel, willow, or chestnut. Our fascines provide a biodegradable, low-carbon solution for erosion control and habitat restoration.

Brushwood fascines are highly versatile:

  • Erosion Protection & Habitat Creation: Installed along banks or under coir rolls, they stabilise soil, slow water flow, and encourage vegetation growth.

  • Living Revetments: Used to raise coir rolls or pallets to the correct water level and absorb wave energy, promoting long-term vegetation establishment.

  • Saltmarsh & Intertidal Restoration: In estuarine and coastal zones, brushwood fascines and mattresses trap fine sediment, aiding natural recolonisation of saltmarsh vegetation and maintaining critical habitats.

  • River Restoration: Fascines can narrow and shape channels, concentrate flow, and create valuable habitats for invertebrates and juvenile fish, proven on many UK rivers, including chalk streams.

By combining traditional materials with modern bioengineering, our brushwood systems offer an effective, natural method of stabilising banks, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing watercourse resilience.
