Wetland Plants

Salix is the UK’s largest specialist grower of native wetland plants, producing over 270 species for use in river, lake, wetland, and coastal restoration projects.

Our purpose-built wetland nurseries have been specifically designed to support large-scale, sustainable plant production for projects across the country. We have eliminated single-use plastic trays and pots, replacing them with reusable tray systems designed in-house to grow our native wetland plants.

Our facilities include one of the worlds largest outdoor coir pre-establishment sites, allowing plants to be grown directly into coir rolls and pallets for rapid establishment in the field. As the only UK manufacturer of coir rolls and pallets, we’ve reduced our production carbon footprint by over 80% compared to imported alternatives, as well as bring one of the first native plant nurseries in the UK to go 100% peat free.

Integrated Constructed Wetland

An integrated constructed wetland is being developed at Hinckley Sewage Treatment Works to treat stormwater, transforming 45,000m² of made ground into four wetland cells that enhance water quality, biodiversity, and sustainability through a fully self-delivered design and build approach.

Clayton West – Integrated Constructed Wetlands

Under the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP), Yorkshire Water collaborated with JN Bentley and Salix River & Wetland to deliver the Clayton West ICW, a landmark project in tertiary wastewater treatment.

Floating Reedbed Maintenance, Papworth Everard

A pioneering 2,000m² constructed wetland for Anglian Water combined sub-surface flow and floating reedbeds to achieve effective wastewater treatment within a compact site, marking the first large-scale floating reedbed used for tertiary treatment in the UK.

Habitat Creation at Padnall Lake, a SuDS Solution

A concrete-lined pond at Padnall Lake was transformed into a thriving natural habitat through the creation of marginal shelves and the installation of pre-established coir pallets, greatly enhancing biodiversity and visual appeal.

Using Carbon Neutral Wetland Habitat to Prevent Erosion in Iport Doncaster

Salix provided a range of bioengineering solutions to stabilise eroding wetland embankments near Doncaster, combining Coir Rolls, brushwood, and Rock Mattresses to balance erosion control with habitat creation. Two years on, vegetation has fully established, providing long-term stability and ecological value.

Restoring East Tullos Burn

The East Tullos Burn was restored from a straight, engineered channel into a meandering stream with functional floodplain, wetlands, and enhanced biodiversity, including 150,000 native plants, improved public access, and award-winning ecological and landscape outcomes.

Olympic Park Wetlands

Salix supplied and installed over 350,000 pre-established wetland and wildflower plants for the London Olympic Park, creating 264 hectares of vibrant, ecologically rich parkland - the largest bioengineering and wetland planting project ever undertaken in the UK.

Afon Gwydol

Afon Gwydol Embankment

Works were required to repair an eroding railway embankment adjacent to the river. This resulted in the embankment encroaching into the river, causing erosion problems on the opposite bank belonging to a local farmer.

River Pinn Enhancement

Salix enhanced a 40m section of the River Pinn, adding riffles, a point bar, flow deflectors, and pre-established Coir Rolls and Pallets to restore water flow and habitat.

River Thaw Enhancement

Salix worked with Environment Agency Wales to restore a 100 m reach of the River Thaw degraded by overgrazing and cattle poaching. By installing and backfilling Coir Rolls to narrow the over-widened channel, flow conditions and habitat quality were improved, enabling vegetation recovery and effective bank erosion control.

Protecting a Pipeline in Carmarthen

An exposed pipeline in the River Johnstown was stabilised by dewatering and relocating it, with Salix using rock rolls, erosion-control coir matting, and pre-planted coir rolls to protect the riverbanks from scour and erosion.

Pembroke Commons

A 1 km stream in historic Pembroke was transformed from a concrete channel into a sinuous, bioengineered watercourse using coir rolls, coir pallets, Bionet C125BN, and wildflower seeding, enhancing flood protection, biodiversity, and the town’s landscape.

Foss Dyke Bank Stabilisation

An innovative vegetative revetment using brushwood and pre-established coir rolls was installed along the River Foss to combat severe boat wash erosion, providing a cost-effective, sustainable solution that stabilised the banks and enhanced wildlife habitat.
