Wetlands and treatment wetlands often face challenges such as poor water quality, sediment accumulation and inefficient pollutant removal, which can impact downstream ecosystems and compliance with environmental regulations. Salix designs and delivers integrated constructed wetlands that naturally treat water, reduce pollutants and improve hydrological performance. Our solutions combine engineered structures with vegetation and soil bioengineering to enhance water treatment while maintaining ecological function.

Floating Islands

FloraFloat plastic free floating islands provide valuable ecological habitat, fish refuge cover and water purification within open water environments. Salix supply and install FloraFloat Floating Islands and can incorporate a diverse range of flowering species to increase the habitat and aesthetic value of the project.

Salix are the largest grower of native wetland plants in the UK – perfect for use in green infrastructure, peatland restoration, wetland creation and other habitat projects.

Brushwood Fascines

Salix produce a range of brushwood fascines for use in rivers, canals and lakes. We use brushwood from sustainable sources and can supply various timber types including Ash, Hazel and Willow.

Pre-established Coir Pallets

Salix produce a wide range of pre-established coir pallets planted with high quality native plant species. Coir pallets are composed from coir fibre which is a sustainable waste product from the husk of the coconut shell.

Pre-established Coir Rolls

Coir Rolls are an organic living revetment that provide erosion control and rapid vegetation establishment. Salix have developed a range of specific species mixes for use in all types of water bodies.

Integrated Constructed Wetland

An integrated constructed wetland is being developed at Hinckley Sewage Treatment Works to treat stormwater, transforming 45,000m² of made ground into four wetland cells that enhance water quality, biodiversity, and sustainability through a fully self-delivered design and build approach.

Goodwick_Moor

Improving Wetland Habitat at Goodwick Moor, Fishguard

A new pond and island were created at Goodwick Moor Nature Reserve to restore wetland habitat and boost biodiversity, using specialist amphibious machinery to minimise disturbance and enhance conditions for birds, mammals, and aquatic species.

Using Carbon Neutral Wetland Habitat to Prevent Erosion in Iport Doncaster

Salix provided a range of bioengineering solutions to stabilise eroding wetland embankments near Doncaster, combining Coir Rolls, brushwood, and Rock Mattresses to balance erosion control with habitat creation. Two years on, vegetation has fully established, providing long-term stability and ecological value.

Hoveton Broad, Wetlands Restoration

A major desilting and dredging project at Hoveton Great Broad restored wetland habitats by reusing silt to create new reedbeds, with all works completed afloat to protect this ecologically important and internationally recognised site.

Restoring East Tullos Burn

The East Tullos Burn was restored from a straight, engineered channel into a meandering stream with functional floodplain, wetlands, and enhanced biodiversity, including 150,000 native plants, improved public access, and award-winning ecological and landscape outcomes.

Olympic Park Wetlands

Salix supplied and installed over 350,000 pre-established wetland and wildflower plants for the London Olympic Park, creating 264 hectares of vibrant, ecologically rich parkland - the largest bioengineering and wetland planting project ever undertaken in the UK.

Floating Reedbed Maintenance, Papworth Everard

A pioneering 2,000m² constructed wetland for Anglian Water combined sub-surface flow and floating reedbeds to achieve effective wastewater treatment within a compact site, marking the first large-scale floating reedbed used for tertiary treatment in the UK.

River Pinn Enhancement

Salix enhanced a 40m section of the River Pinn, adding riffles, a point bar, flow deflectors, and pre-established Coir Rolls and Pallets to restore water flow and habitat.

River Thaw Enhancement

Salix worked with Environment Agency Wales to restore a 100 m reach of the River Thaw degraded by overgrazing and cattle poaching. By installing and backfilling Coir Rolls to narrow the over-widened channel, flow conditions and habitat quality were improved, enabling vegetation recovery and effective bank erosion control.

River Roding Enhancement

Inter-tidal riverbank works on the River Roding near the Barking Barrier used bioengineering methods such as brushwood fascines and brush mattresses to promote sediment build-up, enhance stability, and support habitat creation as part of an Environment Agency enhancement project.

Soham Lode Re-visited

Salix restored 600 m of re-lined embankment at Soham Lode using Coir Rolls and brushwood fascines to stabilise slopes and re-establish vegetation, creating valuable habitat where water voles rapidly returned.
